Hepatitis B vaccine is now recommended for adults 19-59

On April 1, the CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) voted to recommend hepatitis B vaccination for all adults aged 19-59 years. According to CDC medical officer Mark Weng, MD, “There are 20,700 estimated acute hepatitis B infections in the U.S. every year and over $1 billion dollars spent on hepatitis B-related hospitalization. A universal vaccine recommendation would serve as a “natural extension” of existing routine childhood recommendations.

What is Hepatitis B?

Hepatitis B is a vaccine-preventable liver infection caused by the hepatitis B virus (HBV) which can cause cirrhosis or liver cancer.  Hepatitis B is spread through bodily fluids such as blood or semen from a person infected to someone who is not infected. Hepatitis B is easier to catch than HIV. The World Health Organization says the Hepatitis B virus is 50 to 100 times more infectious than HIV.

Symptoms include fatigue, lack of appetite, stomach pain, nausea and jaundice. Learn more about Hepatitis B here
